Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album

Best Instrumental Composition:

“Spoken At Midnight” – Ted Nash, composer

Motéma Music is honored with two wins at the 59th Annual GRAMMY® Award Ceremony on Sunday,

February 12. Saxophonist/composer Ted Nash won in the “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album” and

“Best Instrumental Composition” categories for his latest project, Presidential Suite: Eight Variations

On Freedom, and Nash’s original composition “Spoken At Midnight” (featured on the project). These

mark Nash’s first GRAMMY® wins (following a previous nomination).

“I am so honored to be recognized by the Academy and by my friends and peers in the music industry. I

am blessed to be a musician and have the opportunity to use my art as an expression of thoughts,

feelings and ideas,” reflects Ted Nash. “Presidential Suite is about human rights and freedom around the

world. Now, more than ever, this is extremely relevant and I hope that people continue to find inspiration

in the great speeches that inspired this music. I want to thank Kabir Sehgal and the whole team behind

the production, all the great musicians and guest readers who gave their creativity and soul into the

recording, and Jana Herzen and everyone at Motéma for believing in this project. I also want to thank

Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center for commissioning this music. Mostly I want to thank my

parents for opening our home and embracing people of all backgrounds.”

“We are so pleased that the Academy has recognized Ted Nash with these awards,” says Jana Herzen,

President of Motéma Music. “Presidential Suite intertwines the art forms of acting, political

speech writing, large ensemble jazz composition and historical journalism to create a potent, culturally

trenchant exploration of the power and nature of freedom. This inspirational project champions and

exemplifies the highest integrity in political and artistic spheres and is a must hear and must read. Many

thanks to all voters at The Academy for honoring Ted.”
